The English curriculum is comprised of grammar, vocabulary, and writing.

Objectives:
  • Understand the parts of speech
  • Demonstrate correct English usage and punctuation
  • Increase working vocabulary
  • Write five paragraph essays cohesively in a variety of genres utilizing the Six plus One Traits of Writing


Grammar Usage and Mechanics
  • Parts of Speech ▪ Sentence Structure
  • Usage ▪ Agreement Mechanics/Conventions


Vocabulary:
Systematic instruction is provided on 300 plus words
Literal and figurative definitions ▪ antonyms/synonyms ▪ Latin and Greek roots
Weekly testing, cumulative testing every third unit


Writing:
Writer’s notebook students write to directed prompts or free choice daily.
Students will write narrative, descriptive, persuasive, and expository essays.

Homework:
Vocabulary homework assigned M-W. Grammar homework will augment classroom instruction and provide preparation for upcoming assessments.


Grading:
All assigned work will carry a point value.
Final grades will consist of quizzes, tests, class work, homework, writing journal and assignments. Lack of homework completion will impact grades negatively.
